Importance of Proper Sleep for Single Moms

It’s estimated that more than 80 percent of single parents are women, and, according to The Washington Post, this number has been steadily on the rise over the course of the past 50 years. If this describes you, you understand all too well the added responsibilities involved when you are the sole provider in your household. Just a few of the challenges you’re familiar with facing include:

  • Ensuring adequate childcare while you hold down one or more jobs
  • Social isolation
  • Financial strain
  • Decision pressure

Of all these stressors, one of the most harmful is fatigue. The average adult needs around eight hours of restful sleep per night, and any single mother knows how quickly the day can go. From taking care of the kids and making dinner to paying bills, cleaning, and maybe even going to school, it can be hard to find the time to catch the sleep you need.

An Overlooked Necessity

Most of us don’t consider consequences of sleep deprivation beyond the sleepy feeling that can make it hard to get up and moving for the day. However, sleep is an overlooked necessity, and continually engaging in all-nighters to get everything done can lead to some serious health consequences including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke

There is Hope

Single moms know the feeling of stress all too well, and a restful night’s sleep can seem impossible to achieve. However, when you dedicate some time to the management of your sleep patterns, you’d be surprised at how effectively you can turn your schedule around to work in your favor.  While it will require that you make changes and take certain actions, there is hope for regular good sleep to help you rejuvenate both your mind and your body nightly as you embark on your journey through much-needed nocturnal bliss.

Consider Your Mattress

You’ll be pleased to find that there is so much new technology to take advantage of that can help you take sleep to a whole new level. From memory foam to innersprings and more, it’s easier than ever to find a product that will work best for your specific needs.

It’s also good to consider the fact that you aren’t always at home, and you can find yourself seriously disrupting your sleep schedule when you’re stuck with an uncomfortable hotel bed on vacation or sleeping bag on your next camping trip. To give you the upper-hand, it’s worth the investment to get a good camping air mattress to have available whenever you may need it. The Sleep Buffs have a good guide on camping air mattresses.

Create a Sleep Routine

From biting your nails to chewing your pencil tips and more, we pick up on small behaviors without even realizing it. However, many of these habits are disruptive of our sleep. Just a few things many of us are guilty of that makes it hard to achieve a restful night include:

  • Having the television on in the background as we fall asleep
  • Eating a large meal shortly before bedtime
  • Taking a shower shortly before bedtime

You can likely think of several other habits you’ve fallen into, and now’s the time to reverse them. For example, consider putting up dark blinds to reduce the amount of light that gets in the room. You could also start dimming the lights and spending thirty minutes reading before turning out the lights completely and going to bed. No matter what relaxes you, consider doing it before bed to transition into a more restful state.

The Sleep You Deserve

As a single mother, you have a lot to be proud of. Not only do you single-handedly hold down a household, but you also are raising children who will contribute to the future of mankind. It’s important to understand that it’s okay to take time out of your busy schedule to think about you. By employing these tips, you’re on your way to getting the sleep you deserve to ensure you are healthy, happy, and productive for both you and your kids.
